Schoolwide Enrichment Model

In an effort to enhance the standards-based curriculum, Renzulli's Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) allows us to provide all students with opportunities that bring learning to life. Renzulli (1997) states:

"The SEM can be used as a detailed blueprint for total school improvement. Since the SEM is based upon the vision that schools are places for talent development,  the SEM takes into account the varying abilities, backgrounds, experiences and learning styles of each student and capitalizes upon these strengths and interests so that all children are able to meet their greatest potential through an educational experience that is both challenging and individualized."

A wide variety of enrichment activities including guest speakers, field trips, hands-on simulations, schoolwide assemblies, mentorships and independent studies are fundamental components of our instructional program. In addition to these activities, three new experiences have been introduced at Montclair this year: Enrichment Clusters, Brown Bag Lunches and Independent Projects. The following pages describe each of these components in detail.

An important addition to our student data collection methods is the Learner Profile. This document serves as a body of evidence that is passed from grade to grade and shows the the progression of students' abilities and interests over time. The faculty believes that this information is as important to designing instruction for our students as is formal assessment data.

Dr. Joseph Renzulli clearly states that the SEM
is not a step-by-step prescriptive model that must be implemented in a certain way. And, while it is an approach to teaching and learning that finds its roots in gifted and talented education, it is truly appropriate for any child. The SEM has brought with it a way to increase student exposure to a variety of topics and thereby expand the horizons of all learners.

In an action research study conducted by the school's leadership team during the 2005-2006 school year, student survey responses indicated much higher levels of enthusiasm and engagement in school. Rather than constantly focusing on the deficits of our students, the SEM has provided a new and positive outlook. We look for our students'  interests in various areas and build upon them through rigorous learning experiences.
